Nick Oliveri interview for Arcady Magazine

Here's an interview I did via email with Nick for www.arcadymag.com. I'm still formatting the website so it won't be up for at least a month, so I'm gonna post it here for you all. One question was censored by the record label which kinda sucks cos it's something I've wanted an answer to since it happened. Oh well. Enjoy!

Hey Nick, how are you? Where are you currently located? Describe your surroundings. My surroundings are alright . I live in L.A. , Ca. U.S.A. I have the back house of an apartment building in Hollywood. Its walking distance to everything. And I can practice with my band here.

Firstly, can I just say how excited I am about finally getting to see you in August. The first time I talked to you about coming down to Australia was way back in 2004 in Perth when you were with Queens of the Stone Age. Its been a long time coming. So, I guess my question will be why? Why did it take so long to come down here? Perth 2004 was my very last gig ever with QOTSA. I didnt know it at the time but , it was a great gig and im glad to do it in Australia! I am the Man who fell from Perth! Anyways, I havent come down there because member changes in MG . The QOTSA did really well down under and I feel it is most important to come back to musically kick ass to best this MG line up can! Last thing I want to do is play a place that my previous band played really good in , and pussy foot around with unsure players . So I got a great band together for thisl! 3 piece! Hoss on Drums , Ian Taylor on guitar, im on Bass and Vox!

Dead Planet was the first album you did where Mondo Generator was your first priority. Did this effect the writing and recording process? How?
Yes, it did. Its not a race with Q.O.T.S.A But it is because journalist and the reviews always compare us, so I wanted the song writhing to be the best that it could be. I did not wanted to stray to far away from the QOTSA style of song writhing that I do.

Youve recorded with some incredibly talented people over the years. Who has been your favourite to work with? And is there anyone you havent worked with yet that you would like to? Who?
I been very fortunate in a live setting and in the studio with some of the best players in the world. Chris Goss, Blag Dahlia, Josh Homme,Joe Barresi, Dean Ween, Dave Grohl, David Hoss Wright,Erik Valentine, Mathias Schneeberger, Ian Taylor, Nick Raskilanicz just to name a few.

I would like to record with Guy Dickie Moist Heller, Claude Coleman , Frank Discussion and Jello Biafra.

You were dropped from Sub Noize. Are there any labels youd like to sign with (eg. Going back to Ipecac) or are you going to do a Radiohead and release everything online for free or on your own label, Tornado Records?
I have been doing MG for free the last few years. I did a deal with Mother Tongue in the UK. With no up front money and I havent seen one red cent for soon to be two years. Havent even heard or got an accounting from the owner and crook Julian De Takats, it is people like that kills the music.

How did you come to work with Moist Boyz? Theyre a lot different to what were used to seeing from you.
I know Guy from touring with Ween, and I am a huge fan..

The split with QOTSA was pretty harsh. Could you ever forgive Josh for what he did and get back to playing bass with them? Do you still talk to the other guys?
Its not a matter of forgive, its more of a lost of a friend, and yes I would play bass anytime in QOTSA because I am the bass player of that band!!!

Ive seen QOTSA twice since the dreaded year of 2004 and theyre missing everything that I loved about them. Those that were lucky enough to see them while you were still in the band feel the same way. They very much sound and look like theyre only in it for the money now. If you were still in the band, do you think that they wouldve progressed in this direction or stayed true to their roots?
I dont know why Josh makes the choices that he makes now, maybe money is the fuel for the fire. But I cant say havent been around him for years now.I know that we would stay true to our roots, that was something we help each other do. Its good to have somebody around you thats not afraid to speak there opinion and mind on things, it seems now that he has a bunch of YES men afraid to be fired around him.

Are you still doing acoustic shows?
Yes, I love it.

In the days of Mondo Generator with Brant, Molly and Dave, you used to dress in drag. Why did you stop?
Ran out of dresses. Its something I did for shock value, and nothing else..But doing the same thing evry show just become boring.

Are you still a dwarf?
Yes, I will always be a dwarve. I love that band.

Will The Uncontrollable record an album or are you finished with that?
No.Not as of now.

What are you looking forward to the most about coming to Australia?
The shows. The people that comes to the gigs Australia rocks, and are rock friendly.

Got any last words of wisdom for our readers
Dont drink to much red wine.

Nice interview.
Thanks for posting it.

It seems like Nicks had a rough time but it's good to hear he's always true to the music.

There had to be questions about QOTSA, Wired Ape. People still don't know who Mondo Generator are in Australia.

I do ;_;

But, I can see your point. It's just that it's been years since the split, so it seems kinda pointless because I know of Mondo already :P

"Why didn't you defend yourself when Josh went on Radio 1 and told the world that you beat your girlfriend?" something like that anyway.
